Heart Attack Warning Signs

We’ve all seen the common portrayal of a heart attack in movies and television, but a heart attack can be as unique as the individual experiencing it. While there are some common symptoms, not all heart attacks present the same way.

February is American Heart Month. While we are busy cutting out paper hearts for valentines day, it’s important to also learn the warning signs of a heart attack, so when emergency care is needed, swift action can be taken.

Some heart attacks are sudden and intense, but some start slowly with mild pain or discomfort. The key is paying attention to your body. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek help!

  • Chest Discomfort
Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes. Or it may go away and then return. It can feel like pressure, squeezing or fullness.
  • Other upper body discomfort
For some people, heart attack symptoms include pain or discomfort in the arm, back, jaw or stomach.
  • Shortness of Breath
Whether accompanying chest pain or not, this can be a warning sign that something isn’t quite right.
  • Dizzyness, Cold Sweats, Nausea or Lightheadedness
Can all mean that your heart is not functioning properly and you may be having heart trouble. These other symptoms are actually more common when women are experiencing a heart attack. Some women describe upper back pressure that feels like a rope tied around them, or they feel as though they’ve run a marathon when they haven’t moved at all.
